Monsignor Joaquín Larraín Gandarillas

1888-1897

His remarkable contribution to Pontifica Univeridad Católica de Chile was that he was the first Rector.  In 1888, he established the foundations of the general Educational Project for Chile’s Catholic Church in the 19th century.
UC’s first official activity was a solemn council focused on presenting the objectives of the University and beginning a funding campaign.  The council was held on September 8, 1888. The UC President at that time, Joaquín Larraín Gandarillas, made a proposal to establish an independent university that was not part of the state, and where scientists and professionals could be trained with Catholic values, as in Lovaina, Paris, Lyon, Quebec and Washington.
The Universidad Católica opened along with its first two faculties: Law and Physical Science and Math. In March, 1889, UC's first academic year began.
In 1894, the Faculty of Architecture opened. Three years later, the first two UC professionals graduated: civil engineers Germán Holtheuver Decaer and Jorge Ramírez Urzúa.
