Monsignor Martín Rucker Sotomayor

1914-1919

Monsignor Rucker continued the focus of his predecessors and emphasized professional and practical training. Furthermore, he promoted University Extension.
At the same time, during his term as Rector he began to incorporate social messages from the Church in a more profound way. In order to integrate social work into the classroom, he created courses such as Political and Social Economy in Law and Physics, so that students could become familiar with the most pressing social problems.
In 1914, the first part of the  Casa Central building was completed; this section was later used by the Faculty of Mathematics. The following year, the Revista Universitaria was created, thanks to the efforts of the Student Federation. By 1918, Casa Central was complete and functioning.
