Jorge Swett Madge

1973-1984

During his term, there was a restructuring of staff, which enabled UC to model its structure after that of Universidad de Chile. Moreover, Jorge Swett Madge reacted against some of the 1967 Reform measures and proposed that the University be a center for, and at the service of, science.

Although Swett followed Canon Law, he introduced many changes to the University: the High Council was declared in recess, which meant that the Rector held most of the responsibility over faculties; all types of elections were suspended and new rules for University procedures were to be written.

In 1974, the First International Traditional Crafts Fair in Parque Bustamante was held. The next year, the current UC theater in Ñuñoa was founded where the Cine Dante used to be. In 1997 Teleduc, UC’s Distance Learning Center of was created. During Jorge Swett’s term, Channel 13 was very successful: it increased its television signal, covering most of the country, and it received equipment to transmit in color. Moreover, the Fundación DUOC, created around this same period, expanded significantly.

In financial terms, leaving aside the 1981 and 1982 crisis, the Universidad Católica was able to consolidate a solid economic structure during this period.
