Juan de Dios Vial Correa

1984 -2000

As the head of UC for 15 years, Rector Vial promoted the modernization of the University, fostered graduate programs and new degree programs, and assisted in the professional development of professors and lecturers.
 
Thanks to his leadership, UC received international academic recognition, which led him to be reelected in 1990 for a period of 5 years. An admired and respected professor, his contributions to UC span over a period of more than 60 years.
 
In 1987, Pope John Paul II visited the University. The next year, the UC's first centenary was celebrated and the Asociación de Ex Alumnos y Amigos (Alumni & Friends Association) and the Centro de Extensión (Extension Center) were created. In 1990, 37 foreign students attended UC, kick starting a foreign exchange program.
