Monsignor Alfredo Silva Santiago

1953-1967

During his term, UC went through a stage of rapid development. The number of students rose 4 times and the infrastructure was greatly improved. Furthermore, research was integrated into the responsibilities of all academics.
In 1953, the agreement that would found the Villarrica Campus was signed. The following year, the first UC television broadcasts took place. In 1957, the School of Psychology was founded and a year later the lands of the Lo Contador farm were acquired. The Faculty of Architecture moved to the new campus. In 1961, the School of Journalism was founded. That same year, UC authorities agreed to create a college town in La Chacra of Macul and move most of the University to this new site. It was inaugurated in 1966.
He worked as Rector and Chancellor until 1967, when the student crisis occurred. The students wanted reforms, and they also demanded that Silva Santiago leave his position. The Archbishop at that time, Cardenal Raúl Silva Henríquez, negotiated with the students and the Rector, and eventually resigned. Fernando Castillo Velasco was elected the new Rector. He would implement the University Reform at the Universidad Católica de Chile.
